The Road to the Championship Starts Now!

Welcome to the most exciting month in college sports! As of Selection Sunday, December 7th, the committee has spoken, and the 12-team field for the College Football Playoff (CFP) is officially locked in.

At Team IP, we know that championship seasons are defined by the moments that happen after the regular season ends. As the official merchandiser for 21 college bowl games, high school state championships, and other qualifying events across the nation, we are thrilled to break down exactly how this year’s historic playoff bracket was built.

The 2025 Selection Process: How It Works

If you thought the "Final Four" era was intense, the 12-team format has turned December into a month-long festival of football. Here is the "5+7" formula the Selection Committee used to build the bracket:

The "5" (Automatic Bids): The five highest-ranked conference champions received automatic bids.

The "7" (At-Large Bids): The next seven highest-ranked teams filled out the field, ensuring that powerhouse programs who stumbled in their conference title games still have a shot at the trophy.

???? The Big Twist for 2025: The "Best 4" Byes

In a significant shift for the 2025 season, the rules for the coveted First-Round Byes have evolved. Previously reserved strictly for conference champions, the top four seeds are now simply the four highest-ranked teams overall, regardless of conference title status. This change has reshaped the top of the bracket, rewarding pure dominance over conference formalities.
